Marshmallow Applesauce Cake

2 3/4 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1/2 cup shortening
2 eggs
2 cups unsweetened applesauce
20 large marshmallows

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
Sift dry ingredients together. Set aside. In a large bowl, mix together shortening, eggs and applesauce. Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients. Beat until smooth and well blended.

Pour batter into a greased and floured 13" X 9" cake pan. Press whole marshmallows into the batter and to the bottom of the pan. The 20 marshmallows are placed four rows of five each.

During baking, the marshmallows will melt and rise to the top, making a frosting. Bake for about 50 minutes.
