Spicy Apple Twists
2 large apples peeled cored and each cut in eight wedges
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup shortening
4 to 5 tablespoons cold water
2 tablespoons butter softened
1/3 cup butter melted
1/2 cup sugar with 1 teaspoon cinnamon
3/4 cup water
Sift flour and salt. Cut in shortening till mixture forms small peas.
Sprinkle with water tossing mixture until it just holds together. Form in to a ball. Flatten to about 1/2 inch thickness. Smoothing edges roll out on a lightly floured surface to a 12 inch square. Spread with softened butter.
Fold both sides to center then roll out to a 16 by 10 inch strips. Wrap 1 strip around each apple wedge. Arrange in a 13 by 9 inch pan. Taking care that sides do not touch. Brush with melted butter. Sprinkle with sugar cinnamon mixture. Pour hot water in to pan. Bake at 450 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm or cold with whipped cream if desired. Makes 16.
